Comedy Superstar SUGAR SAMMY Returns Home to Tour Across Canada

2019-04-30

After an incredible year, marked by a series of prestigious events, Canadian comedy superstar Sugar Sammy brings his razor-sharp wit home to Canada to perform in 10 Canadian cities, from September 6 to October 12, from Nova Scotia to B.C.  Tickets ($39.99 - $56.99 + taxes & service charges) go on sale Friday, May 3, at 11 am ET at www.sugarsammy.com. Except the show in Moncton, which goes on sale June 14.

In addition to his success in Canada, Sugar Sammy’s star power continues to grow exponentially in France and the U.S. He won “Best Comedian” in the Le Parisien magazine’s prestigious countdown of 2018’s hottest performing arts and television stars in their annual Les Étoiles du Parisien show and will return to the judges’ panel for season 14 of La France a un Incroyable Talent (the French version of America’s Got Talent), one of France’s most popular TV shows, with ratings averaging 3.5 million viewers an episode. Media have been paying close attention to Sugar Sammy’s fast rising star. He was introduced to the American public through two of its most prestigious daily papers, with a feature that appeared in both the New York Times and on the front page of its international edition as well as an interview on the front page of the Washington Post’s Arts section. Last year he was profiled on CTV’s national newsmagazine W5, which visited with him in both Montreal and Paris. To top it all off, Sugar Sammy just received a Canadian Comedy Awards nomination for Best Live Taping.

The challenges keep coming and Sugar Sammy forges forward. Ultimately, his comedy has changed the landscape of our cultural reality by confronting language and social issues and exploring the great cultural divide. He can hit on cultural, social and political themes with such charm and finesse that it allows him to push the envelope a little farther than most, especially in his famous improv moments, which allow him to interact with audiences at every one of his shows, both onstage and after the shows. Sugar Sammy consistently has one of the most colourful audiences in Canada!

His bilingual show, You’re Gonna Rire combined with its all-French version En français svp!, presented in his home town of Montreal and across the province, had a total of 421 sold-out performances and sold 372,000 tickets, making him the best-selling artist with a first one-man show in the history of Quebec. Then, in 2016, Sugar Sammy performed the hit bilingual show one last time in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 115,000 outdoors at the Montreal International Just for Laughs Comedy Festival.

With all this Canadian success, he promptly decamped to Paris and started over from scratch to see how far he could push French audiences. Pretty far, it turns out! After selling over 60,000 tickets in France, Belgium & Switzerland, his residency at the Alhambra theatre in Paris continues through June. And he keeps popping back home, here in Canada, to remind audiences how good Canadians have it. In 2017 he toured Canada, hosting the Just For Laughs Comedy Tour, which visited 12 cities across the country and this past February he sold out 3 shows at Toronto’s Randolph Theatre.

The past year has also seen him perform in Malaysia and Singapore, launch two comedy specials and record a live show for Comedy Central Asia, as well as tour the U.S.
